Technical Illustration

Overview

Technical illustration is one of the most powerful ways to communicate technical information. It is not an overstatement to say that anything that can be communicated with an image should be.

We all know intuitively that “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Modern cognitive research is showing us why.  The brain processes images in a different area than it processes words. The two brain regions reinforce each other to aid comprehension and memory.

Illustrations can also greatly reduce translation costs.

Elements of Technical Ilustration

Technical illustration is the art of reducing a technical product or process to its elemental parts and drawing images that clearly communicate these elements.  Illustrators use form, line, line weight, and color in their craft.

Many companies shy away from illustrations because of their high cost.  Companies who have been hit with the high cost of translation and technical service calls are reevaluating.

Computer graphics technologies have evolved such that the cost for creating illustrations has been significantly reduced for the following reasons:

·        DXF files from CAD software can be imported into vector graphics programs and used as background templates to cut the cost of creating the form of the device.

·        Vector drawing programs have become much easier to use.

How I Can Help

I can review your technical document and:

·        Identify processes that can be communicated using illustrations

·        Create illustration storyboards

·        Create prototype illustrations

·        Create final illustrations

·        Integrate illustrations into documents with callouts, labels, and text.

My Qualifications

I have created numerous illustrations for user manuals, online help, and training materials for a private manufacturing company.
