Technical Editing

Overview

Users know the quality of your company through its communications and products.  Technical editing is the process of refining technical writing so it conveys the qualities of excellence and professionalism that you want associated with your company.

Elements of Technical Writing

Technical editing include refining communications so they:

·        Adhere to standards of good information organization

·        Adhere to industry and company style standards, including the company branding styles

·        Adhere to standards of good grammar, punctuation, and spelling

·        Preserve the integrity of the information

·        Adhere to principles that enhance translation efforts.

How I Can Help

I can review and revise your documents for a variety of levels of edit:

·        Substantiative editing—reorganization of information for clarity or enhanced information retrieval, or preparation for translation

·        Fine editing—editing for consistency, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style

·        Proof reading—insuring that all edits have been accurately incorporated into the document

When I do a technical writing project, I can also perform the technical editing function for that project. Because I have worked primarily for small organizations, I have usually done both the technical writing and technical editing for each project. I have developed numerous devices to help me edit my own work, a process that can sometimes present difficulties because of too much familiarity with the document.
